Auditorium Etiquette

It is always a challenge to minimize distracting movement and traffic flow in our services so that the working of the Holy Spirit is not hindered. Some movement is unavoidable, but much of it is unnecessary and inconsiderate.
To avoid distractions and offer a program geared to appropriate ages, Grace Baptist Church provides a junior church ministry during the morning worship time. This program includes children through the third grade.
It is best for those with babies and toddlers to use the nursery or to be seated in the back. As soon as a baby or toddler begins to cry, they should be taken out of the auditorium.
Late-comers ought never to enter the auditorium during prayer, Scripture reading, choir numbers or special music. They should always wait for a natural break in the order of service before entering.
Be sure that young children are taken to the restroom before the service begins. Apart from sickness or emergency, neither children nor adults should need to leave until the conclusion of the service. If a child or adult must leave during the sermon, they should take a seat in the back or in the foyer as they return. If the child is too young to sit alone, then a parent should escort them.
Never begin to gather belongings, put away your Bible or put your coat on until after the closing prayer. The invitation is a time for personal heart-searching and prayer for the lost. Please avoid distracting sounds such as cutting fingernails, clicking pens, crumbling paper, unwrapping candy or yawning loudly during the service.
It is wise and proper for families to sit together. If older children are permitted to sit alone with friends, they should sit in a row in front of their parents. Many difficulties arise when children and teens sit unsupervised on the back pews.
With help from everyone, we will be able to eliminate many distractions which sometimes affect the concentration of both pastors and musicians, as well as the working of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the people.
